Folk music is the music of ordinary people, played in homes, and for family and community gatherings. It expresses the values, traditions, social dilemmas and daily life experiences of the people within a culture or sub-culture. American folk music, as a body of work, forms a portion of the oral and recorded history of the life and times of our people. Contemporary folk music is an expression of the continuing growth of our culture, and offers us a look into the lives of our forebears, shows us the common threads which run through past and present and helps us to understand and therefore consciously direct the evolutiion of our culture.
This particular form of cultural history, folk music, is an oral tradition, the dissemination of which can only take place in the context of live performance and musical collaboration. One musician teaches the songs to another, each musician in turn shares them with his or her community, members of the community come forward to learn the songs and pass them on. Thus, the history is kept alive and remains a meaningful, enriching, directing element in our daily lives. A festival such as The Wild Iris Folk Festival, provides the environment for just such dissemination of oral traditions. Many contexts are provided for this sharing to take place, at different levels.
